About

Terii — from teri, the Japanese word for the lustre of a pearl.

I am Japanese, based in Asia, and I have spent more than a decade grading and pricing saltwater pearls — Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea — for a living. Pearls have been in my family for four generations, and this desk is where I write down what a grader actually sees before a number is put on a strand.

The Pearl Desk is written for readers who want to understand pearls rather than be sold them: how they are priced, how they are made, how they are matched and strung, and how to wear them. No brand is promoted here and nothing is for sale.
